A Practical Family Cooler

For picnics and beach outings, portability is usually as important as maximum capacity. The cooler must hold drinks, food and cooling packs while remaining manageable between the vehicle and picnic area.

Useful Size Ranges

Compact 8–10L coolers work for one or two people carrying light refreshments. Around 19–29L provides more flexibility for family day trips. Larger coolers make sense for group gatherings where many drinks or food containers need to stay chilled.

See cooler boxes and reusable ice packs currently available at Red Rhino.

Beach and Hot-Weather Tips

Keep the cooler out of direct sunlight whenever possible. Pre-chill contents, use enough frozen material and avoid repeatedly opening the lid. A cooler sitting inside a hot closed vehicle will face much greater heat load than one kept in shade.

FAQs

Is 8L enough for a family?

Usually only for a small amount of drinks or snacks. A family carrying meals and drinks will normally benefit from more capacity.

Should food and drinks be packed separately?

Separate coolers can reduce lid opening around perishable food, but careful organisation inside one appropriately sized cooler can also work.
