Choosing lighting by wattage alone is no longer enough. Modern LED products are better compared by lumens, colour temperature, beam pattern and IP rating. This guide explains the specifications that matter when selecting lighting for Kenyan homes, offices, shops, hospitality spaces and outdoor areas.
1. Lumens: how bright is the light?
Lumens measure visible light output. A higher lumen figure generally means a brighter lamp or fitting. When replacing older incandescent or fluorescent lighting, compare the lumen output rather than trying to match wattage directly.
For task areas such as kitchens, offices, counters and workspaces, higher useful light output is usually more important than decorative ambience. In bedrooms, lounges and hospitality spaces, glare control and warmer colour temperatures may matter more.
2. Colour temperature: warm, neutral or daylight?
Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin (K). Around 2700K–3000K gives a warm appearance often preferred in bedrooms, lounges, restaurants and decorative spaces. Around 4000K is a balanced neutral white suitable for many offices and general-purpose interiors. Around 5700K–6500K produces a cooler daylight appearance often used in utility, retail and commercial areas.
3. Downlights, spotlights, pendants and battens
Downlights and ceiling lights suit general interior illumination. Pendant and decorative lights add visual character over dining tables, counters and reception spaces. Track lights and spotlights are useful where light needs to be aimed at displays, artwork or specific work areas. LED battens are practical for offices, shops, storerooms and commercial applications.
4. IP rating for outdoor and wet locations
An IP rating indicates resistance to dust and water ingress. Outdoor fittings, security lights and exposed installations generally require a suitable IP rating for their environment. Check the product specification and installation requirements before fitting any light outdoors or in damp areas.
5. Smart lighting
Smart lighting can add app control, scheduling, dimming and colour control, depending on the model. Compatibility varies, so check whether the product uses Wi-Fi, a hub or another control method before buying.
