1. Start with the vehicle handbook

Check the required viscosity grade and oil specification in the owner's manual or manufacturer service information. Common viscosity formats include 0W-20, 5W-30, 5W-40 and 10W-40, but the correct grade varies by engine.

2. What does 5W-30 or 5W-40 mean?

The first number with the “W” relates to low-temperature viscosity, while the second number describes viscosity at operating temperature. Two oils with different grades are not automatically interchangeable. Use the grade and specification required by the vehicle manufacturer.

3. Manufacturer approvals matter
