Buying the wrong cookware size creates two problems: a pan that is too small crowds food and steams it, while an oversized pot wastes energy and can be inconvenient to handle.

16–20cm cookware

Best for sauces, eggs, side dishes, reheating and one or two portions.

22–24cm cookware

A useful everyday range for smaller families. A 24cm casserole or Dutch oven is often versatile enough for stews, rice and braises without being excessively heavy.

25–28cm cookware

This range suits family frying, searing, larger stews and batch cooking. A 26–28cm frying pan gives more room for browning without crowding.

30cm and larger

Best for larger households, entertaining, shallow braises, roasting and high-volume cooking. Remember that cast iron becomes substantially heavier as size increases.

Diameter is not capacity

Two 24cm pots can have very different capacities because one may be shallow and one deep. Check litres or full dimensions where available.

How many pots do you really need?

Most kitchens do not need every size. Start with one small saucepan, one medium family pot, one frying pan and one specialist piece, then add based on actual cooking habits.
