Non-stick cookware is convenient, but the coating is a wear surface. Correct heat, utensils and cleaning can materially extend its useful life.
Use low to medium heat
Most everyday non-stick cooking does not require maximum heat. Avoid leaving an empty coated pan over high heat.
Use suitable utensils
Silicone, wood and other cookware-safe utensils reduce scratching. Avoid sharp metal edges unless the manufacturer explicitly states the coating is metal-utensil safe.
Wash gently
Allow the pan to cool, then use warm water, mild detergent and a soft sponge. Avoid steel wool and aggressive abrasive powders.
Protect during storage
When stacking, use a pan protector or soft cloth between pans so bases do not scratch cooking surfaces.
Do cooking sprays damage non-stick?
Some aerosol sprays can leave residues that become difficult to remove. Follow the manufacturer's care guidance and use ordinary cooking oil when appropriate.
When should you replace a non-stick pan?
Replace cookware when the coating is severely peeling, deeply damaged or no longer performing as intended. Minor cosmetic marks are different from widespread coating failure.
